Mud Phase 1 was very much a learning process, playing with the mix of lime, clay and sand to get something that would stick, be easy to apply, and not mold. More lime helped and is recommended in wet climates. Our s-type lime was slaked in 55 gallon oil drums for months before hand and I think this made it a lot better. For the initial flattening of the walls we experimented with wet straw that was soaked in various clay mixtures: more lime made it better and kept the bales from molding when this wet stuff was applied, whereas initial less-lime mixes molded. We tore out all the molded areas and had to re-do everything we had done: it was disappointing, but we ended up with something much better for it.
