Somewhere around 1996 or 1997, I was doing a lot of meditation practice, reading a lot of Buddhist texts, and listening to a lot of Gospel music. These fused together, and two songs emerged, one of which has been recorded, Sadhu!, one of which (Walk the Path of Buddha) is still waiting for the right moment and people.
While I often do love the austere and quiet aspects of Buddhism, there is something about the Blues and Gospel that seem to embody elements of a clear articulation of Suffering and a deep appreciation of Rapture (Piti), at least to me.
Sadhu! is a Pali word that means something like Excellent!, and is often used in the same sort of way that Amen! is in Christianity. It is my first musical collaboration in decades, recorded over the last 6 years or so. I laid down all the initial tracks, then found some better musicians than myself to fill in some of the gaps. Thanks to Santiago Jiminez for playing guitar, Doug Largent for organ, Dejuana Logwood for vocals, and Jon Otis for recording her vocals, and, of course, as this is the era of AI, Midjourney for the image. I thank artists such as Damita and Stevie Ray Vaughan for inspiration for this one, as well as Bryan Bowers, whose Zen Gospel Singing also formed part of the creative spark here.
